French Open Day 2 Women’s Predictions Including Collins vs Burrage

The first round of the women’s singles continues on Day 2 of the 2025 French Open. 25 matches are scheduled, and our writers here at LastWordOnTennis share their thoughts on all of the matches with you. We split the matches between seven articles. Our other articles feature Emma Raducanu vs Xinyu Wang, Naomi Osaka vs Paula Badosa, Iga Swiatek vs Rebecca Sramkova, Madison Keys vs Daria Saville, Veronika Kudermetova vs Viktoria Tomova, and Elena Rybakina vs Julia Riera. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Manuel Traquete, and Andreas Pelekis. Who do you think will move on?

French Open Day 2 Women’s Predictions

Caroline Garcia vs Bernarda Pera

Jordan:
Garcia could have gotten a worse draw for her final appearance at Roland Garros. However, she does not have a great head-to-head record against Pera, and the American is most comfortable playing on clay. I think her gritty style will be enough to deny Garcia the ideal farewell.
Prediction: Pera in 2

Nurein:
This will be the last tournament of Garcia’s career and with the extra support of her home crowd she might just find it in her to have one last good run here. She certainly got a very decent draw to do so.
Prediction: Garcia in 3

Andreas:
Garcia recently announced that the 2025 French Open will be the start of a farewell tour. The Frenchwoman has largely struggled at her home tournament, but Pera has nearly dropped out of the Top 100. Garcia’s impending retirement may give her some confidence and belief and look for her to show fans a glimpse of her best tennis.
Prediction: Garcia in 3

Diane Parry vs Robin Montgomery

Jordan:
At her best, Parry is a better clay-court player than Montgomery. The home favorite’s season has been disrupted by injuries, and she might not be at her best in this match. Nonetheless, I still think her game will have enough to progress to the next round.
Prediction: Parry in 2

Nurein:
A rare matchup between two players outside the Top 100, but considering ability on this surface and the home court factor, Parry should have a slight edge and pull through here.
Prediction: Parry in 3

Andreas:
This should be a great matchup of contrasting styles. Montgomery’s huge serve will have to work to push through Parry’s defense and strong slice backhand. The Frenchwoman has lost to some tough opponents as of late, but the crowd should get her through Montgomery’s inexperience–this is Montgomery’s first-ever appearance in the French Open main draw.
Prediction: Parry in 2

Elena-Gabriela Ruse vs McCartney Kessler

Jordan:
Kessler’s achievements in the last nine months have been greater than Ruse’s, but they have been on hard courts. Kessler is not as comfortable on clay while Ruse plays her best tennis on it. The Romanian is backed to win by controlling most of the rallies with her forehand.
Prediction: Ruse in 3

Nurein:
It is an extremely difficult match to call, but Kessler has been rising fast up the rankings and seems to have the higher upside of the two. She might well continue her rise here.
Prediction: Kessler in 3

Andreas:
Kessler has played well in 2025, breaking onto the WTA Tour with her strong serve and power. Ruse is a grinder from the baseline, and will likely exploit Kessler’s lack of experience on clay courts. The Romanian has been playing a little better on the slower surfaces this year, and should be the slight favorite.
Prediction: Ruse in 3

Danielle Collins vs Jodie Burrage

Jordan:
Burrage tries to play aggressively in all her matches. Doing that will not be easy against Collins, one of the cleanest hitters in the women’s game. I doubt Burrage can handle Collins’ firepower, and her second serve is very vulnerable in this matchup.
Prediction: Collins in 2

Nurein:
One of the most one sided matches of the tournament, at least on paper. Collins is far above Burrage, both ranking-wise and ability-wise, and should be able to win with relative ease here.
Prediction: Collins in 2

Andreas:
It hasn’t been the best 2025 season for Collins, but her form has improved after each event this year. She stunned Iga Swiatek in Rome, and just made the semifinals of a WTA 500 in Strasbourg. Burrage tends to play better on grass and hard courts, and hasn’t played a main-draw match on clay this year. The American should move on comfortably.
Prediction: Collins in 2
