In the closing laps, Petty held a slight lead, but Pearson was hot on his tail. The two veterans traded paint and positions, creating a breathtaking spectacle for the spectators. As they entered the final turn, Petty and Pearson made contact, sending both cars spinning toward the finish line. In a photo finish, Pearson’s Mercury edged ahead to claim victory by mere inches.
