OVERVIEW
Despite a weak cold front passing through, Saturday ended up being a pleasant and cool day with highs in the 60s and low 70s. PDX recorded a Trace of rain, and Astoria got 0.05″. That will likely be our last measurable rain for a while as an area of high pressure sits offshore in the Pacific most of this week. We are on the edge of ridge, meaning two things:
- Temperatures will stay slightly above-normal, but we aren’t expecting any abnormally warm days or record-breaking heat.
- We have little to no rain in the forecast. Most disturbances would be too weak to break through the strong high pressure to our west, meaning most of the rain/storms will stay in the Rockies and east.

SPRING RECAP
June 1st marks the start of Meteorological Summer, Atlantic Hurricane Season, and Wildfire Season! We started Spring (March through May) with some beneficial rainfall, but the last 6-8 weeks have been abnormally dry.
PDX ended up with 7.61″ of rainfall from March 1 – May 31. This is about 1.5″ under the Springtime normal. Because of the rain deficit, parts of Oregon are under Moderate Drought as of last Thursday. On average, temperatures were slightly above average.
SUNDAY
Today will be another beautiful day! We’ll wake up to some patchy clouds, mainly in the valleys and along the coast. The sun will be out by the late-morning hours and highs will be in the low to mid-70s.
Similar to Saturday, it will be breezy at times. Watch out for a strong North or Northwesterly wind that could bring gusts as strong as 20-25 mph this afternoon. We don’t have any active wind alerts.

TONIGHT – POSSIBLE AURORA
NOAA observed a strong Coronal Mass Ejection from the sun recently, which means a powerful geomagnetic storm/Aurora is possible tonight. The Space Weather Prediction Center forecast calls for a G4 or KP8 storm tonight — Which means it’s possible to see it from a dark place! The sunset tonight is at 8:53 p.m., so you have to wait until the sky is completely dark.

Expect clear conditions tonight with temperatures dropping into the 40s early Monday.

MONDAY – WEDNESDAY
The same area of high pressure continues to sit offshore to our west, so afternoon highs will be about five degrees above the early-June normal. A few clouds are possible each morning, but they will be quick to disappear by the late morning and afternoon.
THURSDAY – SATURDAY
We are tracking a subtle warming trend toward the second half of the week. The same area of high pressure will start to shift east. This means we have a better chance of reaching the low 80s Thursday through the first part of next weekend. Again, still no rain.

DROUGHT UPDATE
As of Thursday, May 29, moderate drought has returned to parts of Oregon due to abnormally dry conditions. This includes 9% of the state, so there’s still plenty of room to bounce back. We just don’t anticipate that happening anytime soon due to a lack of rain in the forecast.
